Message From the Chairman | |
I want to take this platform to announce the departure of Christine Lewis from the Museum Director’s position. Christine has been a large part of our museum’s history, starting in an administrative role. She quickly showed her love for the organization, learning everything needed to eventually take the role of Museum Director. Pete and Christine made a great team, and under their leadership, the museum thrived. She was instrumental in organizing air shows and events, along with overseeing the details of documentation needed to keep several warbirds airworthy. In the years after Pete’s passing, Christine shouldered the heavy responsibility of keeping the museum running and honoring Pete’s legacy. I don’t believe anyone could possibly understand the mountain Christine climbed daily to not let her friend and all of the members down.
I met Christine for the first time at the DeKalb-Peachtree airport during the Good Neighbor show in 2024. I had been invited to park my plane next to the museum planes by one of our member pilots. Christine guided me in, welcomed me and my wife, Rhonda, and hugged us both as if she had known us for years. I could see her passion for the museum and could hear the love of airshows and aviation history. I joined the museum that day. After becoming a board member, Christine welcomed all ideas for consideration. Ultimately, this is why I accepted the Chairman’s position. A group of open-minded individuals willing to discuss and debate ideas to grow an organization is worth putting in the effort. Christine is one of those people.
Now Christine has stepped away from the Director’s position, but has not stepped away from the museum. She will continue to support the mission as a volunteer. On behalf of the entire organization, I would like to thank you, Christine, and look forward to seeing you at many museum events in the future. | We have a wonderful opportunity to reach children through history and aviation by making the museum available to schools and groups. Each field trip is unique, but the smiles are constant! The children have the opportunity to learn about different periods in history, the brave military men and women, and our airplanes and ground transportation. | | | |

We had a good crowd and volunteers at the Rome air show, with a great view of the USAF Thunderbirds performing overhead. The kids enjoy sitting in the T-28 cockpit, touring the C-45, and climbing in the jeep. | |

On display at the museum is a World War II U.S. Army "Special Services" field military portable phonograph, or V-Disc player, designed to be hand-cranked and portable. These were not luxury items. They were morale equipment. Portable phonographs like this helped create a small sense of normal life in camps, hospitals, and staging areas. Most of these were manufactured between 1943 and 1945 by civilian companies under military contract. | | | |
